I did something today that was unthinkable just 10 short months ago. I entered a photo into a photography contest held by one of the premier equipment houses in the U.S. (and world-wide via the Internet) B&H Photo. If you haven’t followed my journey down the photography path, here is the Reader’s Digest version…
About a year ago I was asked by a few key clients to do some video intros for their websites and Facebook Fan Pages (more commonly called “Fan Gates”). I happily obliged and went in search of the best HD video recorder – with a MIC input (more on this later). This was about the time that the idiots management at Cisco shuttered the Flip line of camcorders so I did what an self-respecting technologist does, I searched YouTube. Surprisingly I found that most of the video being shot at that time was on the Canon T3i DSLR with a Zoom H1 and Audio-Technica ATR-3350 Lavalier. All told that little bundle was about a grand. Slightly over budget at the time…
While spending quality time with Google searching for a less expensive alternative, I happened upon Dave Kaminski’s review of the Kodak Playtouch 1080p HD video recorder on WebVideoUniversity.com. Dave was using a $700+ Sennheiser lav mic but I was enamored. I headed over to Amazon an got the Kodak Playtouch, an ATR-3350, and a 16GB Trancend Class 10 SDHC card for less than 20% of the Canon T3i route. I’ve done some great videos with that setup. I even added the Zoom H1 to the mix and with the ATR-3350 attached it is PRO quality all the way.
So what the hell does this have to do with a photography contest? Well, not only does that little Kodak hand-held shoot HD video, it also has a fantastic 5MP auto-focus camera. It rivaled the best iPhone and Android cameras at the time. I started taking snapshots the very day I got it and haven’t stopped since. I was thoroughly bitten by the photography bug
Fast-forward 9 months and I did finally pull the trigger on a DSLR. Yes it was a Canon. Yes it was the T3i – although I labored over making the decision between the T3i and it’s slightly more professional bigger brother the 60D – and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! My world has changed dramatically. Yes by pieces of glass surrounded by pieces of plastic. Those pieces put together as a whole have made me look at the world in a whole new way. Now instead of just glancing around I am looking for “The Shot” in everything around me. As cheesy as it sounds; I’m looking for the beauty in everything I see. So was the case the day I my T3i was delivered.
It had just stopped raining and I heard the familiar sound of the brakes on the UPS truck. I bolted upstairs, met the UPS guy mid-yard, and ran downstairs to put my purchase together. (Yes it comes in several pieces). After charging the battery – during which time I actually perused the manual (Hey guys! I read the instructions
) – I walked through our yard and snapped some shots of the spring blooms in the garden. And I’ve taken dozens of shots every day since.
Today B&H announced their Spring Photo Contest and I did the unthinkable. I knew instantly which shot I should submit. But those dream stealing, ass kicking, suck you into paralysis thoughts of “who’d want to see this?”, and “You’re not a professional!”, and the almighty “Thousands of pros are going to submit theirs, so why even try?” excuses invaded my brain. And I did exactly the opposite of what the voices wanted. I pulled the trigger, again, and submitted my best (and I know it’s my best – up until now – because I will continue to get better) and the votes will fall where they may. I’ve already won – because I’ve actually done it. I’ve done what hundereds (thousands?) decided not to do because of fear. Because of this move more contests will come and I will enter those too.
You can help, if you choose (and if you like the photo), by heading over to the Facebook contest page and leaving a comment. I’d certainly like to be recognized for making the shot, but that’s small potatoes compared to what’s coming down the pike. I’m over the fear of putting myself out there. I’ve already forgot about it being there in the first place.
